Rug Ideas: Create a pulled-together look and add colour, warmth and texture to a space

Rugs

Some of you may recognize the image above and some of you may not. It is a scene from the cult movie by Stanley Kubrick “The Shining”. You are probably wondering what does an 80’s horror movie have to do with rugs. Well, this is a good example of how carefully combining colours, patterns, and textures can set the whole atmosphere in the room. In Kubrick’s case, he is using the rug to set a tense, creepy, mystic, and almost psychedelic mood. This goes to show the huge impact a rug can have on a specific space and just like Kubrick, you too can easily use the rug to achieve a desired effect.

Rugs can be used in many different ways. They can either bring the room together or divide it, they can complement your décor or add a little contrast, they can bring brightness, warmth, and they can be a vivid focal point to any room. But, even if you’re stylistically challenged and don’t really care about all that fancy artsy stuff, a good rug will provide softness and comfort under your feet or protect the floor in areas with heavy traffic.

With the huge variety of rugs for sale, finding the perfect rug to suit your needs can be really challenging. There are a number of factors that you have to consider such as texture, material, colour, size, so on, if you want to do it right. And by “right” I mean right for you because at the end of the day it really is a subjective matter. So here is my short guide that might help you out when you are browsing rugs for sale.

For starters, you need to know where you are going to place the rug and use a little common sense. Different types of rugs are suitable for different rooms. For example, in a busy area with heavy traffic, durability should be your primary concern, while in the bedroom you should go for a much softer rug. Also make sure that it won’t be obstructing any doorways or pose a trip hazard.

Next, you will need to choose the right size for your space. It is not a question of whether it will fit the room or not, but how it will affect the look of the room. If it’s too small, the room will feel empty and if it’s too big, it will make the room look small and cluttered. You can also use a rug to highlight certain furniture such as tables. So before you go shopping make sure you take all the measurements you need.

Also, rugs can be made from different kinds of materials. Natural, synthetic or a combination of both – each of them have different qualities and advantages. Synthetic rugs are usually stain resistant and very durable, but you can also find those properties in traditional materials such as pure wool which has natural resistance to dirt and wear.

Again, choosing the perfect rug mostly depends on your personal preference and, of course, how much you are willing to spend.
