When it comes to cleaning your car, the question is not “should you”, but rather “how often should you”? Honestly it is ultimately down to personal preference, and you should try and maintain it as often as you yourself think you should, that is if you know how to. If you don’t know exactly what you need to do, well then you’ve come to the right place.
There are a few simple preparations that you will need to make before you even get started on the engine itself. Firstly, make sure that the car has been turned off for a while and that the engine is cold enough that you don’t accidentally burn yourself. Next, you will want to disconnect and remove the battery from the engine bay entirely since you won’t want it inside while you will have to use water later on. And finally, you will also want to cover most of the electric components because even if most of the other car components are relatively waterproof, it always pays off to be cautious. For this purpose, make sure that the distributor cap, the spark plug inlets and any loose wires are properly wrapped in plastic.
There are many different brands of automotive engine cleaner, so if you have never done this before, don’t worry since most of them can do the job. Start by spraying the degrease from the bottom up in order to make sure the entirety of the engine bay is properly covered, while also making sure that you don’t spray it on any painted parts as that particular coat of paint will be destroyed as a result. In the event that this does happen, don’t panic, all you have to do is rinse it off the paint as soon as possible and there won’t be any noticeable damage.
You will then have to let the degrease soak for a few minutes before you go and break out the brush. Degrease works by soaking into the built up grime and loosening it enough that you can then remove it easily with the use of a simple brush. After that, it’s all down to getting a sturdy grip on that before-mentioned brush and applying some elbow-grease to break down those built up grime deposits.
Once you’ve applied and used the automotive engine cleaner of your choice to get rid of the grime, all that’s left is to use some water to rinse your engine bay out. As long as it’s low-pressure and doesn’t penetrate the plastic you used to cover the electronics, it’s all smooth sailing from here on out. Let everything dry, connect the battery again and start her up.
