Sensory play is one of those things that sounds a bit more complicated than it really is. It’s actually just everyday play that uses your baby’s senses. Touch, sight, sound, movement and sometimes even smell all get involved. It’s how little ones figure out the world around them. They grab things, look at patterns, shake toys, put everything in their mouths, and react to sounds.

But don’t worry, an engaging sensory toy doesn’t have to be expensive or loud. Simple, age-appropriate options work best, especially when they match what your child is ready for at each stage. It’s less about having piles of toys and more about choosing the right ones that fit your baby’s development.

Best Sensory Toys by Age

source: facebook.com/HipKidsau/

Every stage of early childhood looks a bit different. Babies and toddlers change so quickly, so the kinds of toys they enjoy tend to shift with them. What works for a newborn won’t always interest a toddler, and that’s totally normal.

Newborns to 6 Months

At this stage, your baby is still getting used to everything, so simple things usually work best.

High-contrast items – Black-and-white cards or simple bold patterns are much easier for your baby to see than softer colours. They give your little one something to focus on during tummy time.

Soft plushies – Gentle, soft toys give your baby different textures to feel while also offering comfort during quiet moments.

Crinkle books – These mix soft textures with crinkly sounds that naturally grab your baby’s attention and encourage little hands to explore.

Gentle rattles – Light rattles are easy to hold and shake, and the soft sound helps your baby start to understand that their movements can create a reaction.

6 to 12 Months

Around six to twelve months, things get a lot more active. Babies start rolling, sitting, and often crawling, so everything within reach becomes interesting.

Textured balls – Easy to grab, roll, and chase, these help your baby practise reaching and crawling while also building coordination.

Stacking toys – Nesting cups or blocks are perfect for practising hand-to-hand transfers and figuring out how things fit together.

Activity cubes – Great for keeping busy hands occupied with lots of different toggles, textures and moving parts to figure out.

Teething items with different textures – Great for babies who want to mouth everything. They offer safe textures to explore while also soothing sore gums.

1 to 3 Years

Toddlers are basically little explorers at this point. Everything becomes a bit more imaginative, and play starts to feel more purposeful.

Sensory bins – Simple bins with different textures let your toddler scoop, sort, and explore in their own way.

Shape sorters – Figuring out where the triangle or square goes is a great, rewarding challenge for a toddler’s problem-solving skills.

Busy boards – Lots of little things to press, slide, and spin that keep curious hands engaged.

Toy Instruments – Drums, shakers, or xylophones let toddlers explore rhythm while they shake and make noise.

Pretend play with different textures – Toys with different textures, like a furry play animal or a smooth wooden spoon, make their make-believe worlds feel a lot more real.

How to Choose the Right Option

source: facebook.com/HipKidsau/

The best sensory toy isn’t always the one with the most lights or features. A well-chosen toy often keeps your child engaged for longer and supports their development in the right way.

Match their current milestones. Look for toys that fit what your child is physically doing right now, rather than what they “should” be doing based strictly on their age.

Prioritise safety. Always choose non-toxic, easy-to-clean materials.

Mix up the senses. Try to find toys that offer different sensory experiences like touch, sound, and sight.

Avoid anything too loud or visually overwhelming.

Stick to toys they can actively do things with (like stacking, pulling, or pushing) rather than things they just sit and watch.

It’s less about finding the “perfect” toy and more about noticing what your child responds to.

Simple Ways to Encourage Sensory Play at Home

You don’t really need a big setup or anything complicated. A lot of sensory play happens naturally in everyday moments.

Create a safe, calm play space – A quieter setup with fewer distractions helps babies focus better. Too many lights and sounds at once can feel overwhelming.

Introduce one or two items at a time – Start simple by offering just one safe toy and see how your baby responds. Keeping it minimal helps them engage more deeply.

Let them explore independently – Follow your baby’s lead and give them space to look, touch and react at their own pace. If they start getting fussy or look away, that’s your cue to take a break.

Rotate activities to keep play fresh – Instead of adding more toys, swap them around every few days. Simple toys feel new again and stay more interesting this way.

At the end of the day, sensory play is really just about giving your baby or toddler the chance to explore the world at their own pace. A few simple toys, a bit of time, and your presence are usually more than enough.

Having a hobby perhaps be one of the best ways to relax and unwind from our busy lives. Many people love building scale model toys, and it can be a favourite pastime to nurture their creative side and thus, create miniature versions of their favourite objects.

However, making scale model toys requires much patience, precision, and attention to detail. Besides these skills, some accessories will go a long way in making such models realistic and appealing to the sight, just like the real model.

What Accessories Do You Need for Scale Model Toys?

The accessories required may differ depending on the skill level and type of model that you intend to build. However, there are some essential accessories that any scale model enthusiast should have in their toolkit.

Carbon Fibre Tubes

source: electrobes.com

The first thing you need to consider with any scale model is the structure and stability of your creation. You may have to reinforce certain parts of your model with lightweight yet resilient carbon fibres. These tubes are a common sight in the aerospace and automotive industries, so they’re more than suitable for creating a strong, yet stable structure.

Carbon fibres are made up of individual filaments composed of carbon atoms that are formed into tubular sections or flat sheets. They possess great strength combined with a high strength-to-weight ratio, thus enabling the construction of lightweight structures that are quite durable.

To correctly install carbon fibre tubes in your scale model, you will need a few basic tools. First, you’ll want a pair of cutting tools, such as a sharp hobby knife or scissors to cut the tubes to length. You may also want to use sandpaper or a file to lighten any rough edges resulting from the cutting process.

These will be secured in place by an adhesive that is specifically designed for use with carbon fibre materials. These adhesives are usually epoxy-based adhesives that, once cured, offer incredibly high strengths and durability. Make sure that your chosen adhesive is compatible with both the tubes and the materials to which you will be attaching them.

Another benefit of these accessories is their adaptability for numerous purposes. They reinforce your model’s fuselage, wings, landing gear, and even small details like antennas. With them, any part of the model can be strengthened more to help provide overall strength and rigidity.

Besides structural reinforcement, carbon fibre tubes can also help provide a touch of realism to your scale model. Suppose you’re modelling an aircraft where the components are exposed, such as the wingtips or tail. Using the tubes can add some authenticity to your project.

Hinges and Fasteners

The utilization of hinges and fasteners follows for scale modelling to make any moving part of your model functional. These enable smooth movements, thus making your model really look the part.

This will involve paying attention to the size and strength of the hinges and fasteners about the weight of your model. Larger, heavier models will require stronger hinges and fasteners to carry the weight without compromising stability, while smaller ones will require lighter ones to avoid adding extra weight.

Material-wise, metal is often preferred when it comes to durable hinges that bear heavier models, but plastic or resin hinges will just do for small models or in those cases where there is less stress on the moving parts.

For fasteners, one can also use screws, bolts, and even clips. As with hinges, there is the need for careful attention to material and size, according to the requirements of your model.

Paints and Brushes

source: youtube.com

Besides the physical parts that comprise a scale model, paints and brushes are of paramount importance in bringing your project to life. When working with paints for your model, you must be quite critical about the type of material you will be painting and the level of detail you intend to capture.

Acrylic paints are very popular among hobbyists because they have some desirable qualities: versatile, quick-drying, and are easily thinned or mixed with other colours. Another choice is enamel paints, which are noted for good adhesion and a glossy finish. However, they take longer to dry completely and need more ventilation because of their strong fumes.

You may consider flat, glossy, or metallic paints according to the desired finish. There are also weathering and detailing paints available for very realistic effects of rust, dirt, wear, and so on.

Consider the type of surface on which you will paint, too. Some paints require a primer or base coat to set properly, while others can be applied directly to the surface.

Purchase a selection of fine brushes, which will be handy for close work and details, and several broader brushes, which will prove helpful for broad strokes. It is also convenient to have an assortment of shapes: flat, round, and pointed tips will help to achieve varying effects.

Airbrushing

Another technique that can yield professional results for more advanced hobbyists is airbrushing. This method uses compressed air to spray paint onto the model, allowing for smooth and even coverage.

The main types of airbrushes are single-action and dual-action. Single-action airbrushes are easier to use but give less control to the user over how much paint is being sprayed. Dual-action airbrushes are more skilled to use but give an even more precise application.

Working with the airbrush requires good ventilation and personal protection, like masks, to prevent inhaling fumes and products of decomposition. Practice on scraps beforehand to get the feel of the pressure and techniques that work for specific effects.

Going to the beach is the perfect family activity for summertime. Whether you’re planning to go for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, visiting the beach with your kids can be a real adventure. However, this is only true as long as your child is happy. We all know kids can easily get bored, annoyed, or frustrated – even at the beach. That said, it’s helpful to have some tricks up your sleeve on how to keep them entertained while also allowing yourself some time to relax.

Ways to Keep Kids Busy at the Beach

source: mybtoys.com

We’ve compiled a list of the most entertaining beach activities for kids that can be adapted according to their age. Remember, some of them may require a bit of pre-planning, so keep that in mind. Here are our top recommendations for keeping your kids busy and engaged:

Beach Games

The beach is the perfect place for games because there is so much space available. You can even have your kids play in the water. There are so many great games for kids to choose from, such as volleyball, cricket, football, or tossing a frisbee. Gear up for your next trip with a fun beach toy and see your child have endless fun. You can choose from several beach toy options – an inflatable ball, bats, flying disks, or even a ping pong set. Whether they’ll be playing with their parent, siblings, or friends, games are an excellent idea to keep them busy while also providing physical exercise, social interaction, and fun in the sun.

By engaging in physical activities like running, jumping, and swimming, they will burn off excess energy and enhance their motor skills. Moreover, beach games provide opportunities for children to interact with their peers, family members and maybe even meet new friends. Playing in teams, taking turns, and engaging in friendly competition fosters social skills such as communication, teamwork, sportsmanship, and problem-solving. These interactions can help kids develop their social abilities, build relationships, and learn how to cooperate with others.

Fly a Kite

source: 101corpuschristi.com

Flying a kite is an excellent idea for keeping kids entertained at the beach. It combines outdoor fun, physical activity, and a sense of accomplishment as they see their kite soaring through the sky. It can keep your kids busy for hours, especially on windy days. For young children or beginners, it’s advisable to start with a small to medium-sized kite that is easier to handle. For instance, single-line kites are a good choice as they’re easier to control. Dual-line kites, on the other hand, are suitable for older kids or those interested in more advanced flying techniques.

Build Sandcastles

source: assets.delawaretoday.com

Building sandcastles is an activity that promotes creativity and fosters imagination while also keeping the kids busy. Remember to bring along sandcastle-building tools such as buckets, shovels, and moulds of various shapes and sizes to enhance the experience. Encourage your kids to let their imaginations run wild, experiment with different techniques, and have fun while creating their sandcastles. They can also decorate them with rocks or even have a building competition.

Shell Collecting

Shell collecting is a delightful and educational activity that engages children with nature, stimulates their senses, and sparks their curiosity. It’s an ideal way to make the most of a beach outing and create lasting memories of their seaside exploration. By collecting shells, they can learn about the marine ecosystem, explore their surroundings, and express their creativity. Additionally, they can keep the shells they collect as souvenirs. This can be done by using the shells in an arts and crafts project or making jewellery out of them. Remember to bring a bucket so you have a place to store them and encourage your kids to only collect empty seashells and not to disturb other living creatures.

Water Activities

Splashing in the water, swimming, or pretend playing as mermaids are guaranteed ways for your children to have a blast. You can adapt the water activity according to their age and make sure they’re supervised at all times. If your kid is older and a confident swimmer you can engage in more advanced activities such as paddleboarding and snorkeling. Water activities not only keep kids busy but also offer opportunities for exercise, social interaction, and an opportunity to cool off.

Picnic on the Beach

source: hawaiiparentmedia.com

If you don’t want to get wet and sandy, having a picnic on the beach is a classic family activity that requires minimal planning and will keep your kids entertained. You can all appreciate the ocean view by consuming a tasty meal and enjoying each other’s company. Moreover, it’s a cost-effective way to spend some quality time together as you can bring your own food, drinks, blanket, and other picnic essentials. Pack easy-to-eat food such as snacks, sandwiches, refreshing drinks, and if you’re feeling fancy, a charcuterie board. Don’t forget to bring garbage bags in order to keep the beach clean.

Tips for Going to the Beach with Kids

Before you take on this exciting adventure you need to bring all the essentials that will allow your kids to have the safest and most pleasant beach experience. That said, bringing sunscreen is crucial to avoid sunburn and protect your child’s skin from damage. Look for kid-friendly options and opt for a sunscreen with a high SPF of 30 or higher.

Also, bring lots of water and ensure that both you and your kid are staying well hydrated. Remind them to drink regularly, especially during active play or when spending extended periods in the sun. Last but not least, consider packing some essentials such as towels, chairs, mats, an umbrella, a first-aid kit, and a change of clothes. Kids may get sweaty, wet, or dirty, so having an extra pair of swimsuits is extremely beneficial.

Is It Safe for Kids at the Beach?

The beach can be a safe and enjoyable place for kids when proper precautions are taken. Choose a beach with a large sandy area and shallow water for young or inexperienced swimmers. Also, it’s important to avoid beaches with abrupt drop-offs and if possible, seek out locations where the water remains shallow near the shore. Proper adult supervision is essential when kids are at the beach, especially for younger children. That said, closely watch your children and beware of potential hazards, such as strong currents, steep rocks, or jellyfish. Moreover, teach children about water safety and responsible beach play. Although accidents can happen, the beach is generally considered a safe environment for kids if the above-mentioned safety measures are followed.

Takeaway

We hope our ideas helped you get some inspiration for your next beach trip. Make sure to select beach activities that are both enjoyable for your kids and feasible for you. Customize the activities based on their age, preferences, and abilities. Remember to pack some essential items for the beach and adhere to the safety guidelines we mentioned earlier. Most importantly, have a great time and create meaningful family bonds while enjoying your beach outing.

Marco! Polo! Tag, you’re it! This is an all-time favourite water game for the whole family. But there’s more you can do than just run around the pool. There are so many unique games that have been adapted for water fun. Let’s go down and see the best sports you can transform from land to water.

1. Grip Ball

Who’s got sticky hands? Grip ball is an excellent water game to bring from the grass to the pool. This Australian sport can be enjoyed by the whole family for hours on end. Grip balls can also help children improve their gross motor skills, movement, and balance. In addition, like most games, kids learn to work well with others. These are terrific benefits to a game for your happy family.

How to Play

Grip ball sets are usually made up of two mitts and a ball. This can easily be expanded to more mitts, and another ball can be thrown in there.

You will be happy to know there are water grip ball sets made of neoprene, which makes them waterproof. You don’t have to worry about your ball absorbing water and being ruined.

This game gets a little sticky. It’s more than just a game of catch and throw. It’s like baseball but without the bat. The objective of a grip ball is to catch the ball in your mitt. The mitts are relatively small, so it’s a great way to work on hand-eye coordination.

Once you catch the ball, you detach and throw again. Now, what can make this more interesting is increasing the distance or throwing it as high as the sky to be surprised by its landing.

The most important thing with a grip ball is to have fun. You can create easy, new, and creative games for all. One game can be a water version of hot potato. Whoever drops the ball first is out. Do this until you are left with one winner. The possibilities are as much as you can think of.

source: noveltyplace.com

2. Pool Pong

Did I mean ping pong? No, I meant pool pong. Pool-pong isn’t the same thing as table tennis. Instead, it’s much like a game of skeeball, minus the slopes and different-sized holes. Pool pong is inflatable and can double as a floating device with ease. You can play it alone or with people.

How to Play

In your pool pong kit, you will see four balls of two different colours, a rope and two floats. The game’s objective is to get a pong ball in one of their team’s holes before the other team does.

This is a game for adults and kids. You can always spice it up with higher stakes. For example, if you get the ball in, you’re the one buying dessert. Make fun ways to entertain your family with this versatile water sport.

In addition, you don’t have to worry about it taking up space in your pool as most pool pong games are 1.8m long and 90cm wide. This is more than enough space to enjoy some healthy competition.

You can buy a pool pong game online and not waste time going to the store. Trust me, you will love it.

source: pinterest.com.au

3. Swim and Hoop

Basketball is my favourite sport. I like the way it dribbles up and down the court. Or should I say water? Swim and hoop is my second favourite sport as it brings basketball, and soccer to the water. You can stack a kid or two on your shoulders and let them slam dunk without worrying they’ll land on the ground. Water sports take the cake when it comes to roughing it in the water.

How to Play

Basketball games such as 21, and Make It Take It can come to the water. You will be amazed at how many calories the whole family will burn running after the ball. You will also like that this nett can be set up in the water. So you don’t have to worry about your child running into a ledge of concrete.

Although you can’t play traditional soccer with your feet, this is where we use our hands and heads. Soccer in a swim and hoop can have a goalie who’s meant to deny all attempts to invade his territory. I would put your most defensive kid there.

source: srsmith.com

4. Tube Wars

It’s time to joust! Tube wars are a fun and energetic activity for everyone.

How to Play

If you are playing with your young ones, challenge their strength with a duo. Place one of your children on your shoulders and let the games begin. This may be a good way for siblings to duke it out without anyone getting harmed. The first one to drop is out.

source: pinterest.de

It’s Time to Get Wet

The best activity is being together, even your happy family dog can join in on the fun. Bringing sports from the land to the water is making the best of both worlds. Your kids will create lasting memories of having fun with their parents. Though it may seem simple to you, you will be amazed at how these moments shape your children.

So, are you ready? The last one to the water is a rotten egg.

What Is a Floating Mat?

Floating mats, also known as floating water pads, are waterproof carpets that allow adults and children to walk, lie down, and even play on the water’s surface. They resemble regular pool floats, but they are larger and more exclusive. Moreover, the floating mat can serve as a floating island, but it doesn’t usually have seats, arms, or moulded-in backs.

Water mats can also be inflatable. The main difference between the two is that the floating mats are heavier and more durable than the inflatables. On the other hand, inflatable mats are more affordable as they are easier to inflate and more lightweight when compared with the floating design. Both can be used in a pool, river, lake, or bay. All you need to do now is toss it into the water and relax. To keep your mats from drifting away, you should use an anchor, tether, or latch. When using an anchor, make sure it’s weighted and attached to the mat with a bungee tether leash.

The best thing about water mats is that they come in different styles and sizes. So, you can now opt for a super-cool, tropical kids water mat Australia online stores offer or an LED glow raft, perfect for playing and lounging all summer long. Moreover, some inflatable floating mats contain a connecting zipper system that allows them to be connected to other floats.

source: trlmarine.com

Things to Consider When Looking for the Ideal Water Mat

Safety

Besides keeping your babies cool in the summer, an ideal water mat should provide maximum safety. Being on the water can be dangerous, especially when you intend to use the floating mat in deep waters. Check to see if the mat is puncture and tear-resistant and the quality of the material used to make it. Choose a product with an anchor, tether, and grommets based on where and how you’ll use it.

If you plan to use it on the open sea, you might want to choose a design with bright colours. This way, if something goes wrong, people or watercraft will be able to find you quickly. Because a floating water mat is used as a water platform, choose one that is buoyant and stable and won’t tip over or cause users to fall off. This is especially vital for kids’ water mats.

Durability

Because most floating water pads are expensive, it’s essential to get one that’s built to last and won’t tear easily. You don’t want to keep spending money on a mat that you’ll use a couple of times before breaking apart. Therefore, when buying kids water mat Australia retail stores sell, check their warranty to ensure that the damage is covered.

Material

Another crucial element to consider is the material used to make your water floating mat. Select a product composed of high-quality XPE foam because it’s waterproof, age-resistant, and can be used in various situations. Furthermore, water mats can also be constructed of closed-cell foam. They’re incredibly buoyant and long-lasting. On the other hand, the inflatable ones are equally excellent, although they may not be so durable.

source: i5.walmartimages.com

Stability

The more solid your mat is, the easier it will be for you to float, sit, or lay without falling. This is why a solid and stable floating mat is the ideal addition for adventurous activities. The best water mats allow you to do more than just lay down on them. Choose something sturdy enough for you to run and play while still allowing you to relax comfortably when you want to lie down and soak up the sun’s rays.

What’s more, some inflatable options may come with stabiliser fins to keep them stable. You might want to consider this criterion when looking for the best floating water mat for your family.

Size & Capacity

It’s no fun picking a floating water mat that can only hold a single or a few individuals. To get the most of it on your next vacation, go for a bigger water mat that has more weight capacity. This way, more people can enjoy it, and you may participate in more activities.

The most common size for a water mat is 18 by 6 feet. However, larger sizes are also available. Up to three adults can be accommodated on a 9-foot-long water mat, whereas an 18-foot-long mat may accommodate 12 people. To bring more people with you, opt for a mat that can be joined to another one.

Portability

When it comes to portability, you’ll want a water mat that is easy to care for. You already have many items to pack for your next vacation, and you’d prefer something that’ll be easy to transport and won’t take up a lot of room in your car. Most boat lockers can accommodate a conventional water mat. However, it’s also good to pick something simple to store. All you have to do is roll the mat up and secure it with Velcro or hook & loop straps.

source: cdn.shopify.com

Maintenance

Look for something that requires low maintenance, but that doesn’t imply you should allow your water mat to get soiled. After each use, some mats don’t need to be washed or cleaned. This is ideal for folks who don’t have time to clean up their mat every time they use it. It should be alright as long as you maintain them clean and dry before putting them in a storage bag.

Read the labels to learn how to clean and store the items properly. All you need to clean a low-maintenance water mat is soap and water. Some merely require water pressure or a hose to eliminate the algae and dirt.

Having a toddler myself, I know how excited children get when they receive a gift. They rejoice when they receive a gift for their birthday or the holidays. And they love it even more when it’s a surprise, and they’re not expecting it. How important are gifts for little kids?

The Importance of Gift-Giving for Children

When kids receive a gift, they feel loved, valued, and cared for. Interestingly, children feel that way even if no one particularly teaches them. It’s because gift-giving has been a part of human nature and culture since the very beginning. Nowadays, I see more and more parents limiting the gifts their children receive because they don’t want to spoil them. Although a bit of balance won’t hurt anyone, we must continue to give gifts to children.

Giving gifts to children is a simple yet effective way to teach them gratitude and appreciation. Big or small, they learn to express thankfulness for the gift and appreciate the thought behind this. Even research backs this up, saying that presenting children helps shape their identities so that they can become gift-givers themselves.

Choosing a Gift for a Boy

Source: parenting.firstcry.com

Do you have a little boy in your life for who you want to show some love and appreciation? Maybe you haven’t seen him for a while because of all the quarantining. A gift can help you reconnect with him and offer you a relaxed start over. Or, it’s his birthday, and you want to choose the best gift. People tend to say that this is a heavier task than choosing a gift for a girl. This just doesn’t sound right. That’s why we made this guide full of cool and fun boy gift ideas for you to make the right decision.

What are some good gifts for a boy? What can help you pick one that will be right on point? There are several factors to consider when choosing a gift for a boy, such as his age, his interests and talents. However, there are things that boys will never get bored of, no matter their age or preferences.

Best Boy Gift Idea

Army Toys

Source: shabbychicboho.com

When we think of an army toy, we immediately think of the green figurine toy soldiers from our childhood. You’re probably wondering, do they still make toy soldiers?

Not only do they make them, but they have also improved their design and materials, so they’re still appealing to the modern child. You can find a variety of high-quality army toys today that can get any kid excited. Such are army toy sets that include toy soldiers (regular or lego style), tanks, planes, police cars and other items for an imaginative combat play.

Boys love games that include combat, and with such military toy sets, you ensure they engage in open-ended play for hours. This kind of game encourages kids to use their imagination and boosts their creativity levels. It helps them develop social skills, as they can play with other kids and in groups.

Boys and girls, we all enjoyed playing with army toys when we were kids. Although a lot has changed in the past few decades, some things have remained the same, such as the simple things that make kids happy. Military toys are equally enjoyed by kids today as they were in the past. And, they can be an especially good choice for military kids.

Military kids seem to be tough and resilient, and their military lifestyle helps them get through tough times in life. But they’re only kids, and they sure miss their mums and daddies a lot. Getting them a plush teddy bear in military clothes will honour the service of their parents and give them something that they hug every time they miss them. They can keep them company at night, keep them safe, and help the child sleep better while mum or dad are gone.

Plush toys have many benefits for kids, but many boys don’t like them, saying they’re for girls. But they may think otherwise when they get a military-inspired plush toy. They may like it better as it resembles a hero, not something they find girlish like a plush unicorn toy, for example

Dinosaurs

Have you ever met or seen a child obsessed with dinosaurs. I know I have, not just one: there are so many kids with the dinosaur obsession. Why do kids, especially boys, love dinosaurs so much?

There’s a period called hyper fixation that children go through when they hit the 3-year mark. Also called “imagination-based play,” this is a phase when kids become deeply interested in subjects like fairies, monsters, and: dinosaurs. As one expert says, dinosaurs fit into their make-believe world as they aren’t alive today. They’re like unicorns and fairies, which makes them the perfect toys for imaginative play.

For dinosaur lovers, anything, including dinosaurs, makes for a fun and exciting gift. There’s a wide variety to choose from: puzzles and accessories for older boys to playsets, figures and plush toys for the younger ones.

Science Kits

Source: selfsufficientkids.com

Maybe you’ve seen an episode from the sitcom Young Sheldon. And, even if you haven’t got a clue what’s that or who’s Sheldon Cooper, you should know one thing, a great mind of science is born. What I mean to say is that there are kids who are interested in science and stuff as early as they’re 2 years old.

If you know your boy is interested in experiments and wants to know how things work, a science kit is a great gift. Besides being fun, it provides a great learning opportunity. Some sets include everything you need for at-home fun experiments kids can make with their parents, and some are puzzle-style. Neither choice is wrong for the boy with curiosity.

If you’re looking for ways to spend time on the beach, but swimming or surfing isn’t your thing, then perhaps driving an RC model boat might be something you’d want to try. RC vehicles, in general, can be a great opportunity to spend some time outdoors, whether it’s racing or just mindlessly driving around.

While RC boats might not be as popular as RC cars, with the advancement of motor and battery technology, they’re quickly climbing the ranks. That being said, if you’re on a mission of buying your first RC boat, understanding the basics will help you make the right choice.

First of all, I’d like to point out that you can find ready-to-run RC model boat kits that are easy to use straight out the box. Boat kits with a single motor and battery are the most popular ones. However, twin-motor boat kits are also available. Unfortunately, single-motor boats can only run up to several minutes at a time.

The drive system in most RC boats is quite simple. They feature an electric motor near the front that’s connected to a shaft running towards the back of the boat and through the bottom of the hull. The shaft is within a stuffing tube filled with grease. The grease in the tube prevents water from getting into the hull and provides lubrication.

At the end of the shaft, you’ll find a propeller, and there’s a shaft on the rudder that protrudes into the hull, where a small servo motor actuates it. The electronic speed control and radio receiver for the motor are typically enclosed in a waterproof casing. From the casing, you’ll see a radio antenna emerging, as well as battery wires, a rudder servo cable and the on/off switch. The built-in battery pack (usually lithium-polymer or NiMH) capacity is usually 1100mAh, and it provides a nominal DC voltage of 7.2V.

RC boats offer an entirely different experience than driving an RC vehicle or flying an RC plane. Both DIY and RTR kits are made for everyone to easily jump into the fun. RC boat kits are quickly becoming favourite among RC enthusiasts and for all the right reasons. They offer outstanding performance, and they look great. Even though most RC boats look great, there’s much more to think about, namely the power, drive and radio system, ESC the battery and charger.

The power system is comprised of a brushed or brushless motor. Brushed motors are more affordable but less powerful than their brushless counterparts, but they still provide decent power and runtime. Brushless motors, on the other hand, are more powerful, are far more efficient and require less maintenance.

The drive system is where the electric motor transfers power to the propeller through a drive shaft. The driveshaft, as aforementioned, features a stuffing tube that helps it leave the hull and establish a connection with the propeller. The radio system is comprised of a radio frequency transmitter and receiver. The old 27MHz systems are replaced with 2.4GHz systems, as they’re less prone to interference.

Most RC boats made in the last few years come with programmable ESCs. This allows alteration of the cutoff voltage to protect the batteries from over-discharging. The option to program your own ESC through the EPM (ESC programming module) also allows you to set cutoff preferences, activate braking and pick throttle curves.

The battery of the RC boat is one of the most important things you’ll have to consider. As aforementioned, your best options are lithium-polymer and NiMH batteries. NiMH batteries are more affordable and provide decent performance. However, they have a sharp discharge curve, meaning that the performance and speed of the boat will vary based on the charge level of the battery. Lithium-polymer batteries, on the other hand, have a flatter discharge curve and are lighter. This means that the performance and speed from start to finish will be more consistent.

Additionally, lithium-polymer batteries are free from performance degradation, a problem that NiMH batteries suffer from. When choosing a lithium-polymer battery, consider the C rating. The C rating refers to the amperage-discharge capabilities of the battery. Higher-rated battery packs can handle higher loads.

Lastly, you’ll need to choose a suitable battery charger for the batteries. While this is something that’s seemingly unimportant, it can actually play a crucial role in the longevity and performance of your batteries. You’ll find timer and peak detection chargers. Peak detection chargers are recommended for the best results. Timer chargers are more affordable, but peak detection chargers feature advanced charging algorithms to make sure the battery is fully charged safely.

Remotely controlling items is fun, no doubt about it. When the first ever RC car was introduced in 1966, a lot of people were excited. This car was made by Elletronica Giocattoli and it ran on nitro, called the Ferrari 250LM.

source: nitrotek.co.uk

A year later, a British company called Mardave started commercially producing RC cars. Around that time other manufacturers started making RC car kits too. In the 70s, electric RC cars started to emerge as well as off-road RCs. The 80s were the decade that ended the golden era of RCs ended but also when fast racing RC cars and off-road 4WD started to gain popularity. During the 90s, racing cars continued to be popular alongside touring cars, which started as a new type of RC category in the early 90s. Starting from the 2000s till today, different types of RC cars have been introduced (RTR models too) but despite all the changes, building kits are still a big part of it.

What to Consider

Type

When it comes to a DIY RC car kit, there are two different types. Block cars are constructed with building blocks and thus they do not require any tools. Traditional RC cars, on the other hand, have more complex parts which require certain tools in order to be built. You also have what are known as hybrids which require some tools but the building process is still straightforward.

source: availableonline.com.au

Age & Difficulty Level

The age of the person building determines whether they’ll need need a straightforward or a more complex kit. Kits for adults are usually pricier because of their complexity but you can always go for a simpler RC kit if you are new to this.

Size & Style

The size of a finished RC car may not seem that important but if you want to use it indoors it will be important. You’ll want it to be small enough so you are not limited to certain ares of your home but you don’t want it to be too small either. The style of your RC will depend on what you want to do with it. If you want to go over obstacles, go for trucks. If you like using your RC on smooth surfaces, go for street RC cars.

How to Build a RC Car Kit

Tools

source: youtube.com

Building a DIY RC car kit requires a set of RC specific tools. You’ll need a sprue cutter to snip the parts off a plastic “tree” called a sprue. This tool ensures that you make a flush cut without leaving a small piece of the sprue on the part. A hobby knife or also known as an X-Acto knife is used to trim the excess material left on moulded parts. You can also use it to get rid of dirt in small spaces such as a head of a screw.

Whilst most RCs have a four-way wrench which can be used with different fasteners, when building an RC car kit, a more convenient solution would be to have a nut driver. Curved Lexan scissors are also necessary so you can cut stickers or trim the body of the car. A body reamer is needed in order to make a body-post hole an a Lexan shell which will be way easier and safer than using any other tool. Needle-nose and slip-joint pliers are used to handle all the small parts that come in the kit as they are safer and easier than using your fingers.

Prepare

To make the building process easier, make sure you have your workplace ready. Have everything you need within arm’s reach and the area you are working in should be well lit and ventilated. Make sure your working environment is clutter-free too. Remember to refrain from opening all of the bags right away – just have them ready on your workbench.

Cut

You need to start first by cutting the thick plastic material in order to make the chassis. Usually a 7.6 cm x 17 cm rectangle is going to be good and once you’ve shaped that out. cut a 2 cm x 3 cm rectangle on either side of it 2 cm away from the front of the chassis.

Assemble & Install

Assemble the wheel axles first by following the guide provided in the kit. Usually, you need to layout the wheels and their accompanying pieces, fit the gears to the axle and then attach the wheels. After that, assemble the shocks. You may also need to put in some lubricant when it comes to the shocks which should be included in the kit. Once you’ve slid the springs onto the shocks, attach the shocks to the axles. Continue by installing the electronics such as the servos, electric motor and battery.

Attach

Take the shell and secure it over the chassis with clips which should be included in the kit. Make sure the shell is able to come off easy. Do not use glue for this step as you won’t be able to make adjustments or perform repairs when necessary.

While we forget the importance of fun in our lives when we grow up, mostly because of getting stuck in a rut trying to find the right balance between work life and personal life, it’s through our children that we’re reminded again what it means to have fun and why it’s so necessary to make it part of every day.

Playtime is essential for kids because it’s also when a lot of learning happens, and you have to agree it’s easier to acquire information when you’re having fun. Even though nowadays it’s not difficult to entertain kids with all the options of devices available, be it smartphones or tablets, screen time can be bad for kids, especially kids younger than five which is a reason more to opt for creative imagination toys instead.

The extensive range of toys you can find, differing in materials, styles, outdoor, indoor, perfect for pretend play or educational, suitable for children of all ages, means you have plenty to choose from in terms of price and safety too. Considering not many of us pay indoor pollution the attention it deserves, it’s important to choose toys that are made of organic materials with low VOCs to ensure the safety of your kids.

Now, moving on to the reasons as to why creative imagination toys make the better option, let’s start from the fact kids begin to understand the world that surrounds them by pretend play, imitating their parents, the roles in the family, the words they hear which goes to show there’s impact on the development of social skills, playing with more kids or the parents, and expansion of vocabulary.

Furthermore, in the case of educational shape sorters, stacking toys, jigsaw puzzles, blocks and construction as well as dollhouses they help them learn about the different shapes, their colours and how to arrange them thus developing the problem solving skills essential for school years, particularly math problems and later in life.

There’s also the development of gross motor skills thanks to toys like balls, kites, rocking horses and bikes, great for balancing too. Let’s not forget emotional skills either!

Playtime has its essential role when it comes to the development of empathy and it’s something to be worked on in the early stages of childhood because that’s when kids learn how to make friends and the benefits stemming from kindness and sharing. With craft activities they work on their creativity and creative kids turn out to be creative adults. Now that’s a thought to dwell on!
